One thing that may help is realizing that you're going to feel the same no matter how long you wait to put them down. And in the meantime, while you're waiting til "you're ready", you're taking time away from your children & grandchildren. You won't wake up one day & say " hmmm, I just don't feel like smoking today, I quit". And the nicotine replacement may help, but you'll still have to make the decision to make that your last cigarette. Get rid of all cigarettes, tell your hubby or wife to take your keys so you can't go to the store & just get through the first 24 hours. Once you get there tell yourself there's no turning back. If I pick one up, I'll be right back where I started. You think you'll feel better to have cigarettes there, but you are only giving yourself a way to fail. You can do this. You deserve to kick this habit. I began smoking at age 11 and smoked until I was 29. I was "ready to and trying to quit" for 16 of those 18 years. When all i had to do was face the reality that no matter when I put them down, it would always be up to me to make the decision that this is the last one. After 2 weeks I couldn't stand the smell of second hand smoke. I do not miss it.
